The Sun, The Moon and Love
THE SUN, THE MOON AND LOVE
© Sara L. Russell 2003
"Who is this goddess?" Whispered the sun,
As the moon traversed the sky,
"This angel, silent as a nun,
This silver dragonfly?"
He moved in for a closer gaze,
His heart began to speed,
As through a misty, cloud-spun haze,
He watched the moon proceed;
Soft silver tresses graced her brow,
Her dress, mother-of-pearl,
billowed like sails on a dream-ship's prow,
or curved tsunami-swirl.
"Oh Lady Moon" murmured the sun,
"I burn, I swoon for you.
"Come let me kiss you, gentle one,
Before night passes through."
"Come languish in my warming arms,
To music of nightjars,
Come let me taste those subtle charms,
Dear lady of the stars."
"Ah, do not court frivolity"
He heard the moon reply.
"My purpose is to steer the sea
And yours to light the sky;"
"Why, if I languished here with you,
Tall ships would run aground,
And you must light each day anew
Or all nature confound."
The sun-god would not be deterred,
But kissed her trembling lips.
As they embraced, no sound was heard
Throughout the first eclipse;
Waves lay as mirrors where they kissed,
Until they drew away,
To drift back into heaven's mist,
As night melted to day.

Sara..
Nice write as usual. I loved the way you described the eclipse as a romantic embrace between the Sun and the Moon with the earth as the audience. Lovely indeed.
I loved these lines:
"Why, if I languished here with you,
Tall ships would run aground,
And you must light each day anew
Or all nature confound."
Much the way women think, so mature. One must always give priority to the work he has been assigned to perform.
Keep writing.

Thanks for your kind comment
Thanks for your kind comment Amartya!
This is one I wrote a few years ago; I like to write about legends and legendery beings such as fairies, vampires, sorcerers etc... usually I find it harder to write about my own life in a poem.
Best regards,
Sara
Hmm.. yes..
But then some how, some where your characteristics do get reflected in your poems. I bet you will agree. If a good poem is like a good wine then the poet is the barrel where it has been aged..
Amartya
Thanks! Yes I think there
Thanks! Yes I think there is something of me in the poems I write, perhaps some of it has encoded events of my life in the symbolism somewhere...
Best regards,
Sara
I like this very poem very much
You write very well! A Romance of the sun and moon is epic indeed. My favorite lines that seemed so perfect were
"Ah, do not court frivolity"
He heard the moon reply.
"My purpose is to steer the sea
And yours to light the sky;"
One must stay true to there purpose despite thier paasions; yet thier paasions ignite thier purpose. Great write! I enjoyed it thouroughly.

Thank you Spiritual Awakening!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. :) I would like to turn it into a song one day, as I write songs too.
Sara,
